Physical Education Program
The Physical Education Program caters for students of all ages and abilities. Students can expect to participate in activities designed to:
Some of the features of the program are the Gymnastics Unit, Perceptual Motor Program, Jump Rope for Heart, Athletics Unit, Friday Sports Program, X-Country events, whole school sports mornings eg. ‘Footy Day’, Special School’s Swimming, X-Country and Athletics Carnivals. Students can get involved in several performance based activities including the Main Campus skipping team ‘Rope Rocketeers’ or the Senior Campus team ‘Vaulting Heartz’ who visit local schools to perform a variety of routines. The Aero-base team also competes in competitions during the year, and won the State Championship in 2018.
There is an abundance of Physical Education equipment which enables us to provide a challenging, stimulating and varying program for all students to engage in.
Visual Arts is a weekly hour long session. Students explore the art elements of colour, shape, line, form, texture, space, tone and value through a variety of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional activities. In addition, principles of design such as pattern & repetition, contrast, emphasis, proportion, variety, balance, rhythm & movement, and harmony & unity are informally discussed and attempted in artworks.
All students create a visual art diary to provide ongoing visual records of the processes, designs, photos and reflections of their art journey.
To complement the Visual Arts Program, Art Club is offered once a week during lunchtime for the extension of interested artists.
In Performing Arts students have the opportunity to express themselves creatively via the mediums of drama, dance, music, games and song.
Outside structured classroom lessons, there are numerous other opportunities for Marnebek students to participate in the performing arts.
Our main campus operates a fun and exciting horticulture program for students of all ages. It is fully equipped with several raised garden beds, fruit trees, established herb garden, composting area, worm farming stations and a large secure shed. Our students participate in a variety of hands on learning programs that build lifelong passion and skills in horticulture, focusing on safety, respect, responsibility and resilience.
Our Junior students are taught to experience the horticulture garden with their senses. It is a sensory wonderland. Our herb garden, worm farms and fruits and vegetables are incorporated in a range of hands on activities that allow students to explore and experience first-hand. We learn about living and non-living things, cause and effect and how things move. We identify garden tools, insects and parts of a plant. Learning about the weather is important to our horticulture program. Students learn to identify different types of weather, being aware of appropriate clothing attire and being sun smart. Appropriate garden tools are introduced to our junior students, focusing on safety and responsibility. Students practice different gardening activities, such as weeding, watering and properly planting seeds and seedlings into soil. We enjoy watching the garden grow, harvesting our crops and getting a bit dirty in the process!
Our Middle students practice using scientific language and vocabulary as well as incorporating our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) values to our horticulture lessons and activities. In the garden, students identify and describe herbs, systematically using their senses. We learn that herbs have many uses, compliment other foods and students harvest them for use in Marnebek’s cooking program, Food Technologies. Students become more familiar with the life cycle of plants and butterflies. They are able to describe attributes of living things with more description. Our Middle students learn more about the earth, its natural resources and how we use them in our everyday lives. Students practice their categorising and graphing skills when presenting data they have collected. Many students enjoy the hands-on activities involving planting seeds, seedlings and plants and the more laborious activities of shoveling mulch, transporting wheelbarrows and constructing garden beds. Many students express interest in our Senior campus’ “Hands-on-Learning” program that provides outstanding experience to further students’ interest of horticulture and landscaping.
At Marnebek School, we offer an engaging study program encompassing Life Skills outcomes. Students, from Prep’ to Year 8 participate in weekly Food Technology lessons, over one semester. These lessons aim to engage and challenge each student to learn new skills and develop knowledge that will contribute to their ongoing learning and independence in the kitchen.
Throughout the year students explore topics such as hygiene and safe practices in the kitchen, nutritional value of food items, food cultural influences, catering and servicing within the industry, gathering information from a variety of sources.
Each week Food Technology involves the preparation and production of food items and cooking, an activity all students love, especially due to the ‘hands-on’ practical approach to learning.
Students learn skills such as safe use of equipment, and following procedures using their individual recipe books, complete with visuals to ensure all students are actively involved in this process. Students are encouraged to take their recipe books home at the end of the semester to practice with their family.
An important goal is for students to be able to develop confidence in the kitchen, independently or with minimal supervision. These skills may assist students in the future should they seek employment in the hospitality industry. Food being cooked includes recipes from all around the world. We endeavour to make the program cross-curricular involving literacy, Numeracy, ICT and inquiry activities.
