Post school pathways: entering “life” should begin before year 12

Where will my child go after they finish high school? What will they be doing? Will they thrive professionally and overcome life’s many challenges? Understandably, these questions fuel anxiety in many parents, and ultimately, the choice of the path forward after high school will ultimately fall on the student and their family.

International Journal of Training Research (2022) analysed key influencers behind students’ post-school academic and professional decisions. The study found the perspectives of school teachers and parents to be most carefully considered when a path forward is chosen by the student.

So how can we influence the most informed and wise decisions from students before they enter adult life?
By providing the best possible environment, we can ensure the best possible outcomes for our children.

At Marnebek School, we are devoted to providing a stimulating and engaging setting which motivates our students to apply themselves in their learning and believe in reaching their full potential. We believe that positive outcomes can be achieved only by also focusing on the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of our students. According to Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2022, almost 30% of young people indicated high emotional distress and more than half needed support with their mental health at one point in time.

Our vast network of dedicated educators, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers and psychologists work together to provide a highly individualised education to all students. We firmly believe that children that feel safe, secure and supported achieve more.

Aside from getting good grades, exposure to varying learning opportunities and inspiration from talented teachers can help the students and families tailor the best post-school strategy for them.

Along with guidance, we also offer practical support for students seeking to bolster their resumes with tangible work experience before they even graduate high school. Our Work Experience program, available for year 10, 11 and 12 students, brings together employers with young employees and provides all the necessary paperwork.

Our students also have access to the Marnebek Careers portal, where they become accustomed to their skills, values and areas of interest. We teach our students to create resumes and cover letters that they can use for job applications.

In 2023 we’re rolling out a new program called Life Ready Skills, where students learn about topics such as scams, moving out, Medicare, smart spending and voting. This year will also introduce a VR Careers room for students to experience different careers in a simulated virtual reality environment.
