Message from the Principal’s Office

Chris Murray

Dear Parents and Carers,

Life continues at Marnebek at a fast pace with so much happening in the past fortnight and more events to come over the next couple of weeks.

Book Week Dress Up Day

On Wednesday, 24th August, we celebrated book week, the theme this year was ‘Dreaming with eyes open’. It was fantastic to see so many students (and staff!) dressed up as their favourite characters from many different books. Teaching staff ran lots of different activities to celebrate this very fun day!

Student Achievement

A huge congratulations to Teikaii Soeun in Year 5 who participated in the Cross Country event at the National Championships in Adelaide. Teikaii finished in 22nd place overall and proudly wore his Team Vic uniform. What an outstanding achievement! Congratulations to Izabela Horvat in Year 9 who had also been chosen to represent Team Vic. Well done!

Student Attendance

It has been pleasing to see more and more students returning to school more regularly. This has led to better routines being in place for classes, with students learning in a structured, safe and supportive environment.

2022 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey

The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is open until the 16th September. We ask you to please take the time to complete the survey as your opinions are important to us and will contribute to the future management and organisation of our school. Please refer to our Compass post Invitation to participate in the 2022 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey for detailed information. The survey is conducted anonymously, and it is important to us that you complete the survey as honestly as possible.

Construction works over 17th September – 3rd October

As you know, our school received $10 million as a part of the Victorian School Building Authority’s Capital Works Program. This funding will allow us to deliver exciting upgrades to our school so we can make better use of our facilities. The smart, innovative design provides more than just bricks and mortar; it inspires learning and encourages active participation from not only our students, but also our local community.

In order to provide these new upgrades, some disruption may occur during the construction phase. Between 17th September – 3rd October asbestos removal from some of the older buildings at Corrigans Rd Campus is scheduled. The asbestos will be removed in strict accordance with the regulations. Work will be undertaken over the holiday period and outside of school hours by an expert asbestos removalist and an occupational hygienist engaged by the builder.

As a further precaution, air-quality monitoring will also take place during the removal, and a clearance certificate must be issued by the occupational hygienist before any person can access the area. Air-quality monitoring measures the number of asbestos fibres in an area. An area is safe to occupy and a clearance certificate can be issued, when the level of airborne asbestos fibres is below the limit of detection.

Following the planned removal of the asbestos, we will be able to move forward with the rest of the building works. It’s important that the community are not onsite at the school from 17th September – 3rd October (inclusive) while the asbestos removal and demolition works occur. Please do not hesitate to contact me through the front office on 5996 3858 if you have any further questions.

Footy Dress Up Day

Friday, 16th September is the final day for Term 3. The students will finish at 2pm on this day. This day is also our whole school Footy Day! We invite students and staff to come dressed in their favourite footy team colours. It will be great to see all the different teams our school community barracks for.

Finally, this Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day, a day to focus on the importance of fathers or father figures in our lives and the crucial teachings that they have given us. Thank you to our wonderful School Council who have organised the Father’s Day gift stall. Your time and dedication is very much appreciated.

Have a fantastic weekend, and hopefully we will see some Spring weather!

Kind regards,
Chris Murray | Acting Principal

Anxiety about going to school

Going to school is usually an exciting and enjoyable event for children and adolescents. However most children are occasionally reluctant to go to school or have some anxiety about activities like school camp; it is also normal that at some stage in life most of us will feel anxious when faced with a difficult situation.

Anxiety becomes a problem when it is persistent and prevents a person from enjoying normal life experiences for a long period of time. You can help your child to cope with anxiety in effective ways and, in doing so, help them develop self-confidence and resilience.

What can you do?

It is important not to dismiss your child’s anxiety but to help them see that the situations they are worried about may not be as bad as they think.

  • Remain calm: you will be better placed to make them feel more confident. Try not to let your child see that you are worried or frustrated

  • Listen to your child: encourage him/her to share their feelings and fears

  • Don’t dismiss your child’s feelings: everyone feels afraid sometimes and your child might perceive this as you not understanding or not caring about their concerns

  • Talk it through: discuss various scenarios, possible outcomes and ways to handle situations to help your child develop problem solving strategies

  • Let them have a go: avoid taking over or giving your child the impression you will fight their battles for them. Some children with anxiety are happy for others to do things for them and if you take over, it might stop them learning how to cope for themselves. It also reinforces a perception that they are helpless and that someone will rescue them

  • Remind your child: everyone makes mistakes and that this is where the best learning comes from

  • Be punctual: Avoid being late when picking up or dropping off your child up from school

  • Problem solve: with your child about what is causing the anxiety. For instance, if your child has problems walking through the front gate, arrange for them to meet a friend or use another entrance. If they find socialising in the yard before school starts a source of anxiety, arrange for them to arrive just before the bell.

  • Encourage & reassure: even if they will be late encourage your child to go to school; reassure them that you will contact the school to explain

  • See the GP: arrange for a visit to the GP if your child reports persistent physical complaints

  • Be consistent: have a clear agreement between parents (even if separated) that school attendance is not optional and communicate this in a clear and calm manner to your child

  • Reward: provide rewards for appropriate behaviour and avoid unintentionally rewarding school avoidance

  • ·Be clear: be clear with instructions and requests and consistent with consequences

  • Be involved: if possible, be active in your child’s school through things like the school council or the canteen

  • Support: model skills for becoming more independent and how to manage appointments, multiple homework tasks and competing demands

  • Seek assistance: there is assistance and support available. The sooner you talk to your child’s school about concerns, the better.

  • Get support: for yourself if things are feeling overwhelming and distressing

Greetings from Classroom 7/8 A

Term 3 started with a lot of excitement! It has been a very chilly and busy term . The students in 7/8 A focused on all the Curriculum areas . The students improved their literacy skills by working on their reading , writing and speaking & listening by daily practice using different literacy programs. In numeracy, we worked on our numbers and algebra, data and measurement through various math programs. We also did cooking this term. We enjoyed watching the Commonwealth games and keenly followed Australia’s progress . We also celebrated Book Week this term . We have been engaging in a lot of fun learning activities!

News from 9/10 A

In class 9/10 A, we have been engaging in a lot of hands on activity on the set goals for this term. As a class and above all as a ‘TEAM’ we contributed towards achieving the targeted goals. We indulged in cooking and made Fairy Bread and enjoyed having it.

Our champs enjoyed the STEM session. They made colours using Primary colours and well exhibited their skills in achieving the set goals.

Here comes Book week, our favourite part of this term. We love books and this is well demonstrated in choosing a character for the Book Week. The students from dressed up in their favourite character and enjoyed sharing information with their peers using technology.

Learning is fun when we our with our team. We do our circle time, literacy, numeracy, inquiry, science, P.E, and what not. We are doing a wonderful job as always and would keep up our great team work.

Speech Pathology Week 2022

Good Communication Better Communities

Happy Speech Pathology Week! Did you know that 1,200,000 Australians have communication disabilities? Communication is more than just speaking – it can involve using body language, facial expressions, writing, using pictures and speech generating devices. Communication allows us to build relationships, learn about the world around us, and access our communities. Tips for successful communication include:

  • Use simple language

  • Allow time for the person to respond

  • Repeat yourself or say it in a different way if you feel the person has not understood

Who’s Who @Marnebek

Kim Nguyen - Education Support

Hello everyone!

My name is Kim. I have been working at Marnebek as Teacher Assistant since Term 1 of this year, after finishing my Cert IV in Education Support. I am working in 1/2E classroom at the moment.

I was a health care support worker for few years before changing my career.

It is such an honor to be part of Marnebek community. I love my job as it’s my passion and joy that to provide support and assistant to my students, enable them to achieve the best outcomes and successes on their learning journey. That’s the best reward and motivation for me to come to work every day.

I have a 5 yrs old son, he loves building Lego, drawing, and feeding the ducks at our local park…so we always spend our quality time to have fun and do these fun activities together whenever possible.

In my spare time, I love to try different cuisines, explore new places and visit my favorite temple in Warburton. A special treat for myself is a half hour of meditation everyday – enjoy the moment of peace and happiness that helps me to balance and recharge my energy after a busy day.

Nice to meet you all!
